The Sweet Taste of Success
Saturday afternoon witnessed what is hopefully to become a staple of preparation for the West Port Book Festival – a fundraising cake sale held in the West Port and beyond. The afternoon was a sweet success full of cake and camaraderie.
We had an overwhelming abundance of cake reflecting the spring season with cheerfully iced fairy cakes, refreshing orange cake and pink strawberry macaroons. A variety of backgrounds came through in the cooking with classic American brownies, Swedish chocolate torte and creamy Polish pastries.
A special thank you to Robyn and Madeline at the Scottish Poetry Library, David and Chris at Armchair Books and William, and Miriam at Edinburgh Books for hosting this event. Robyn, Madeline, Miriam and Chris especially made my and Kay’s afternoon manning the cake counter thoroughly enjoyable. Be sure to stop by these venues to stock up on some summer reading!
Despite the pleasant conversation inside, it became clear by midafternoon that the sun was keeping people outside. If the people don’t come to you, go to the people - so out we went to the Meadows Festival to proclaim the word of West Port and busk our cakes. Here, the people we met were excited to hear about a free, local, independent book festival, and so great was the enthusiasm that the incredulous leer we encountered from one individual did not even put us off our stride.
If you would like to support West Port but didn’t see us on Saturday, we are always delighted to accept cheques made out to the West Port Book Festival and sent to Edinburgh Books, 145-7 West Port, Edinburgh, EH3 9DP. You can also donate online using PayPal with the button on your left.
